ELK RIFLE RUT HUNTS
| Trophy
Hunters Alberta offers the majority of our elk rifle rut hunts in the
rugged Alberta foothills northwest of Calgary, near Rocky Mountain House. These
zones offers good habitat and terrain for elk. Rocky Mountain House is about 3 hours north and west of Calgary,
just east of the mountain zones leading into the massive Canadian National Parks.
These are large zones of several hundred square kilometers each. |

ELK - RUT
THA offers elk rifle rut hunts in the
rugged Alberta foothills NW of Calgary from Caroline to near Rocky Mountain House,
areas that contain excellent elk terrain and habitat.
Accommodation is usually a
remote tent camp, a rustic remote lodge (complete with restaurant, store, satellite
TV and other amenities) or a local motel in a small town in, or near, the hunting
zone.
During these hunts, we will be cow-calling and/or
bugling to try to bring the bulls in to our hunters. We are very flexible in the
methods we use to attract the bull elk. If one method isn't working, we will change
the plan and/or location as required. On these hunts, we provide each hunter with
complementary mule deer and wolf and coyote hunting. There are excellent wolves
in these areas. Opportunity rates for elk during rifle season can range from 0%
to about 50%.
Elk can be the most difficult
ungulate to hunt due to their incredibly wary nature, however, they are undoubtedly
the most magnificent trophy in the deer family. Once spooked, they are not like
deer, holding up in the next bush or draw, but rather they start running and may
not hold up for 1 to 3 miles thus negating any pre-hunt scouting. Once elk are
spooked, they become very nocturnal and require hard hunting to find where they
have decided to settle down. Unlike our archery hunts, where we see elk most days,
rifle elk hunts can be very unpredictable, especially once the elk have been hunted
by rifle hunters.
Our preferred accommodation for our
elk rifle rut hunts is the 'Grandview Stage', a rustic remote full facility lodge,
which we use if we plan to hunt within a reasonable distance from the lodge. Our
typical tent camp is a semi full-facility remote camp utilizing large outfitter
tents, frequently interconnected. The guides and cook are located in their own
tent, giving hunters privacy and lots of room. There is typically a central area
for cooking and eating. Each tent has its own wood stove. We also utilize a variety of local motels when practical.
We
try to limit each camp to only 4 hunters and frequently only 2 hunters. There
will be 2 guides and a cook in each 4-man camp. In one tent camp, the senior guide
is Barry Kwan, a very experienced and productive Alberta hunter/guide who has
the knowledge and smarts to get results. Our senior guide for our Grandview Stage and/or motel camps is Todd Bunnage. We can arrange 1:1 guiding if desired.
We
generally provide a number of ATVs in each camp to facilitate travel within the
zone and to assist in getting harvested game back to camp. We
sometimes utilize a two-hunter jet boat to allow access into areas of the zone
that would otherwise be very difficult to hunt.
