ARCHERY HUNTS

Hunt big game Mule Deer with Trophy Hunters Alberta in some of Alberta's finest Mule Deer areas, namely the eastern slopes of the Canadian Rocky mountains, the foothills area of southwestern Alberta, the prairie giants in the south and east and the monsters of the famous Calgary Bow Zone. It is not unusual to see hundreds of mule deer, and hopefully a few in the world class keeper category in these zones.

Our mule deer hunts are conducted using the aggressive "spot and stalk" method. We spot them and then we go after them. This is a different experience for most of our hunters and adds a whole new dimension to their hunting experiences. Expect a lot of action. We use very few, if any, tree stands for our archery muley hunts.

Our archery mule deer guides are all very experienced bow hunters. In fact in the past few years, the #1, #2 and #4 indoor/outdoor compound and #1 recurve shooters in Alberta have all worked with THA. Our #1ranked Alberta compound and recurve shooters are also #1 ranked in Canada. With such quality guides, it is easy to understand how we can provide a world class archery mule deer hunt.

We offer four distinct types of Archery Mule Deer hunts as summarized below.

The Calgary Bow Zone (WMU 212) is a private land hunting zone renowned world wide for its record class deer. This is a productive hunting zone where archery is the only legal method to hunt big game. It is 1 of the 2 areas in Alberta where archery hunts are allowed during the annual rut without the usual incursion of rifle hunters.

The hunting season runs from early September through to the end of November. Accommodation is typically at local working ranches, hotels or B&Bs.

The SW, southern & eastern Alberta archery mule deer hunts occur predominantly on private land in WMU 304 in the Foothills (Porcupine Hills) SW of Calgary, in the Monster Muley Prairie zones along the southern border with Montana (WMUs 102, 104, 106 & 110) and in the 'Trophy' area from Drumheller over to the Saskatchewan border east of Calgary (WMUs 160 & 162).

We generally utilize 4x4s and/or a lot of walking and stalking depending on the location and style of the hunt, as well as the physical condition of our hunting guests.

Tim Wells, outdoor writer, host of the TV series "The Sportsman's Game Bag" and producer of many hunting videos for the World Hunting Group, harvested this 165 class mule deer on a filmed THA hunt.

Tim has hunted with THA for 9 consecutive years and has harvested 11 P&Y deer, all fully filmed. Watch Tim's TV program for ongoing shows.

ARCHERY - MULE DEER

1. Foothills Archery Hunt

These hunts are operated in the '300' WMUs and provide a high success probability for our hunters. There are lots of mule deer and some very serious trophies. In the open country (WMU 304), spot & stalk is the preferred method to hunt these Mule Deer, while in the more forested areas (WMUs 314, 318, 320, 324, 326), we utilize spot & stalk, still hunting, tree stands and ground blinds. Transportation during these hunts is generally by THA 4x4 with limited to extensive walking required depending on your level of physical fitness. Accommodations are at a ranch, B&B, cabin or local motel. Our Foothills Archery Mule Deer hunts generally occur during the annual velvet to pre-rut stage of a buck's development. We are able to hunt these trophies during the pre-rut when they have not been hunted for many months and remain largely undisturbed. During these hunts, we will do lots of spotting, walking and careful, planned approaches in open country.

We conduct these hunts annually from August 25 > October 24.

Cost of Foothills Archery hunt: $4,500 CDN > $6,500 - Whitetail add $500 > $1,000

2. Mountain Archery Hunt

These hunts are operated in the WMUs 400 & 429 with much more cover for muleys than is available for our Foothills Archery Hunts. Also, the season is much shorter since the rifle season in these WMUs generally opens on September 24. Ground blinds, some tree stands and limited spot & stalk are the preferred methods to hunt these dark-horned monsters. Their spruce rubbed antlers are much darker than their open country poplar rubbed cousins in the Foothills. Accommodations are at a B&B, full service lodge or a local motel. Our Mountain Archery Mule Deer hunts generally occur during the annual velvet to initial hard horn stage of a buck's development. We are able to hunt these trophies during the very early season when they have not been hunted for many months and remain largely undisturbed. Due to the nature of the mountain habitat and terrain, hunters will not see as many mule deer on our Mountains Archery hunts as on our open country style hunts.

We conduct these hunts annually from August 25 > September 23.

Cost of Mountain Archery hunt: $4,500 CDN - Whitetail add $500

3. Calgary Bow Zone Hunt

The Calgary Bow Zone (WMU 212) is a private land hunting zone renowned world wide for its record class deer. This is a productive hunting area where archery is the only legal method to hunt big game. It is one of the two areas in Alberta where archery hunts are allowed during the annual rut without the usual incursion of rifle hunters. Although access is always a challenge in this area, our success rate is generally very good. Ground blinds and tree stands are the preferred method to hunt these Mule Deer. We only utilize spot & stalk when the habitat and terrain are conducive to this style of hunt. We never want to chase our muleys from accessible land to posted land. Transportation during these hunts is generally by THA 4x4 with limited to extensive walking required depending on your level of physical fitness. Accommodations are at a B&B or local motel. We are able to hunt these trophies during the entire season from velvet and pre-rut when they have not been hunted for many months through the full rut. Since this is an archery only hunting zone, the mule deer remain largely undisturbed for the entire season.

We conduct these hunts annually from about September 5 > November 30.

Cost of CBZ Archery hunt: $5,500 CDN - Whitetail add $1,000

4. Prairie Archery 'Trophy' Hunt

Our Prairie Archery Trophy Mule Deer hunts are our highest demand hunts and are operated in the wide open prairies of southern (WMUs 102, 104, 106 & 110) and eastern Alberta (WMUs 160 & 162) and are spot & stalk hunts for Alberta's largest trophy mule deer. The land consists of mostly privately owned agricultural and grazing areas rich in food and water sources for deer. These hunts are definitely action packed hunting experiences where a hunter typically sees lots of bucks and usually some serious trophies. The extremely limited number of allocations available for non resident hunters makes these hunts the most desirable, high demand archery mule deer hunts in Alberta due to the very limited pressure on the muleys. For example, in WMUs 102, 104, 106 & 110 there are only 4 archery mule deer allocations per WMU and in WMUs 160 & 162, there are only 8 and 6 archery mule deer non-resident allocations respectively. On these hunts, each hunter has a dedicated guide for his own private and thrilling hunt. There are lots of mule deer and some very serious trophies. Spot & stalk and ground blinds are the preferred methods to hunt these free ranging, open country Mule Deer. Transportation during these hunts is generally by THA 4x4 with moderate to extensive walking required depending on your level of physical fitness. Accommodations are at a ranch, B&B or local motel. Our Prairie Archery Trophy Mule Deer hunts generally occur during the annual velvet to pre-rut stage of a buck's development. We are able to hunt these trophies during the pre-rut when they have not been hunted for many months and remain largely undisturbed. During these hunts, we will do lots of spotting, walking and careful, planned approaches in open country.

We conduct these hunts annually from about September 5 > October 31.

Cost of Prairie Archery hunt: $5,500 CDN - Whitetail (limited availability) add $1,000

IMPORTANT!

Mule Deer hunts are our specialty!

THA offers a wide range of Mule Deer hunts to meet most every requirement of a discerning Mule Deer hunter. Mule Deer are our specialty - we know what we are doing and we get results.

Our official position is that we expect to show our hunters minimum 140 class mule deer or larger. Yes, we do get larger muleys as witnessed by our 4-year average of 160 B&C average score for our mule deer. However, we do not want to in any way mislead any hunter into thinking that he simply has to book a hunt with THA and turn up and that there is then every likelihood that he should have an opportunity at a 190+ class mule deer. We assure you that we have had hunters who, in spite of many communications, hear what they want to hear and not what we have really said. It is extremely important that every hunter is realistic. We want to get the big one just like every hunter who hunts with THA. There is no doubt that we have the best mule deer hunting areas and very experienced guides. These are the criteria that typically ensure a successful hunt and another returning THA hunter.

Transportation for all of our mule deer hunts is primarily in a 4x4. Alberta is big country and the tested and proven method for finding and harvesting trophy mule deer is covering lots of extensive territory, glassing all possible bedding and feeding areas, being in good physical condition and hunting long and hard.

We will find mule deer in their preferred habitat and we know what that is and where it is located. We do not use remote camps for our mule deer hunts since the largest quantity and best quality of mule deer tend to be harvested from more open rural country. This open country has woodlots and some bushes, but frequently consists more of long grasses and brush on huge rolling hills where natural ground blinds, field swales, fence rows and other natural outcroppings allow for stalking these magnificent animals. In our 'Bush' mule deer hunts, there is obviously more cover available to the muleys and, as a result, our 'Bush' muley hunters do not see 'hundreds' of mule deer during their hunt.

As well, we provide low cost optional mule deer hunting as a secondary option on many of our elk and moose hunts. It is important that hunters understand that, on these hunts, mule deer are not as plentiful and are not a priority species that we will spend any real amount of time hunting - unless of course we harvest the primary species early in the hunt. We do not describe our 'Bush' hunts or secondary option mule deer hunts as 'Trophy' hunts, although there are trophy muleys to be had on the these hunts.

We provide free wolf & coyote hunting to all of our mule deer hunters. The odds of seeing a wolf are low in most areas, however, we usually harvest several wolves each hunting season. Alberta coyotes are plentiful and generally larger than typically seen elsewhere.

All our Mule Deer hunts are fully guided with 2 hunters per guide (except the 3-day Trophy hunts which are guided one-on-one) and are all-inclusive (airport service, guiding, accommodation, meals, rough caping & transportation during the hunt). Other than the prerequisite rental vehicle to allow hunters maximum flexibility, with THA there are no hidden, or surprise, charges and no trophy fees. One-on-one guiding is available on most hunts at an additional cost of $1,500/week. Also, non-hunters are welcome at an additional $1,500/week per person.

All hunt pricing is in Canadian funds and tax (6%) and licenses are extra.
