RIFLE HUNTS

Hunt big mule deer with Trophy Hunters Alberta in some of Alberta's finest mule deer areas, namely the eastern slopes of the Canadian Rocky mountains, the foothills area of southwestern Alberta, the prairie monsters in the south and east and the elusive giants in the rural and forested areas NW of Calgary. On our open country hunts, it is not unusual to see hundreds of mule deer, and hopefully a few in the world class keeper category.

Our mule deer hunts are conducted using the aggressive "spot and stalk" method. We spot them and then we go after them. This is a different experience for most of our hunters and adds a whole new dimension to their hunting experiences. Expect a lot of action. We do not use tree stands for our open country mule deer hunts, however, for the bush muley hunts we frequently do use some tree stands.

Our mule deer guides are all very experienced hunters and many are archery trained. In fact in the past few years, the #1, #2 and #4 indoor/outdoor compound and #1 recurve shooters in Alberta have all worked with THA. Our #1ranked Alberta compound and recurve shooters are also #1 ranked in Canada. These same guides assist with our rifle hunts once the archery season closes. With such quality guides, it is easy to understand how we can provide a world class mule deer hunt.

Our Porcupine Hills and Prairie 'Trophy' mule deer hunts are by far our most productive mule deer hunts. Hunters can generally expect to experience several harvest opportunities. These hunts occur on predominantly private land throughout the Porcupine Hills, a specially designated area SW of Calgary in the shadow of the Canadian Rocky Mountains ( WMU 304), and on private land in the WMU 100x zones in southern & eastern Alberta.

RIFLE - MULE DEER

THA's Primary Rifle Mule Deer hunts take place in Alberta's top producing Mule Deer zones. Such territories include the eastern slopes Mountain and Foothills regions of the Canadian Rocky Mountains, the 'Trophy' zones of the southern and eastern Alberta prairies, the 'Trophy' Porcupine Hills area in the expansive foothills of southwestern Alberta and the rural and public forested areas NW of Calgary that lead into the eastern slopes of the Canadian Rocky Mountains. No other outfitter approaches THA on hunt flexibility and overall Mule Deer success and every year we have amazing success with our Mule Deer hunters. Our guides are all experienced hunters/guides who live and hunt in, or near, the area in which they are guiding. By utilizing experienced, respected local guides, access to thousands of acres of private ranch properties becomes available to THA hunters.

We offer three distinct types of rifle Mule Deer hunts as summarized below.

1. Foothills & Mountains 'Bush' Rifle Hunt

These hunts are operated in Alberta Foothills WMUs 318, 320, 324 & 326 and Mountain WMUs 412, 414 & 429 in the wonderful forested rural and crown areas SW, west and NW of Calgary and provide a high success probability for our hunters. Although our hunters in the 'Bush' hunts will not see the quantity of mule deer that they would see on our Foothills 'Trophy' hunts, there are still serious trophy muleys in these zones where, because of the habitat and terrain, they are able to seek cover and to survive many hunting seasons. Ground blinds, tree stands and limited spot & stalk are the preferred methods to hunt these dark-horned monsters. The spruce rubbed antlers of the bush mule deer are much darker than their open country poplar rubbed cousins encountered on the Foothills 'Trophy' hunts in WMU 304 and the prairie WMU 100x zones. Transportation during these hunts is provided by THA and is generally by 4x4 with limited to extensive walking required depending on your level of physical fitness. Hunters should be prepared for extensive time in a 4x4 as it is essential that we keep on the move always attempting to find the next monster. Accommodations are at a full service lodge (the Grandview Stage), a ranch, B&B or local motel. These Mule Deer hunts can occur anytime from the season opening on September 24 until the end of November. Many hunters prefer to hunt the 'Bush' muleys during the early season when they have not been rifle hunted for many months and remain largely undisturbed.

Cost of Foothills & Mountains 'Bush' Rifle hunt: $5,000 CDN - Whitetail add $1,000

2. Foothills Open Country 'Trophy' Rifle Hunt

These 6-day 'Trophy' mule deer hunts are operated in WMU 304, one of our most productive mule deer areas in Alberta. This WMU is located in the beautiful Porcupine Hills SW of Calgary and since 2003 our hunters in this zone have experienced 100% harvest on mule deer averaging 160 B&C. Many hunters have reported seeing in excess of 100 mule deer per day in WMU 304. On this hunt, we expect to see numerous 140 class mule deer and every year harvest numerous muleys that score in the 175 to 190+ range. You will hunt on extensive ranchlands in an area where an average ranch is about 4,000 acres. These are almost exclusively spot & stalk hunts with extensive ground coverage in a 4x4 glassing the many hills, draws, coulees, river bottoms, etc. for the biggest mule deer we can find. We should see lots of bucks and the decision will be yours as to whether or not this is the deer for your next stalk. Transportation during these hunts is primarily by THA 4x4 with limited to extensive walking required depending on your level of physical fitness. The better your physical condition, the more unexplored territory you can cover. Usually we have access to horses, ATVs and snowmobiles, when they are required, to retrieve a downed mule deer from a difficult situation. Accommodations are at a working cattle ranch, a guide's home, a B&B or a local motel. Guiding is 2:1 with optional 1:1 guiding available at an additional cost. The season for these hunts is from September 25 to> November 30.

Cost of 6-day Foothills 'Trophy' Rifle hunt: $6,500 CDN - Elk (limited availability) & Whitetail (limited availability) add $1,000 each

3. Prairie Open Country 'Trophy' Rifle Hunts

These 3-day 'Trophy' mule deer hunts are our highest demand hunts and are operated in the wide open prairies of southern and eastern Alberta and are spot & stalk hunts for Alberta's largest trophy mule deer. In the Prairie zones, hunting is only allowed Thursday, Friday and Saturday during each week in November, so these hunts are definitely action packed hunting experiences where a hunter typically sees lots of bucks and usually some serious trophies. The extremely limited number of allocations available for non resident hunters coupled with the very limited draw opportunities for Alberta residents make these hunts the most desirable, high demand mule deer hunts in Alberta due to the very limited pressure on the muleys. For example, WMUs 102 and 104, two massive zones in the SE corner of the province each have only 2 mule deer rifle allocations available and THA owns all four. WMU 106 has only one mule deer rifle allocation and THA also owns that permit. As a result, THA owns all the mule deer allocations along the southern border with Montana from the SE corner with Saskatchewan to about half way across the province. On these hunts, each hunter has a dedicated guide for his own private and thrilling hunt. There are lots of mule deer and some very serious trophies. Spot & stalk is the preferred method to hunt these monsters. Transportation during these hunts is by THA 4x4 with moderate to extensive walking required depending on your level of physical fitness. Accommodations are at a ranch, B&B or local motel. During these hunts, we will do lots of spotting, walking and careful, planned approaches in open country. We conduct these hunts Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays during November, the only days open for hunting these prairie giants.

THA offers a wide range of Mule Deer hunts to meet most every requirement of a discerning Mule Deer hunter. Mule Deer are our specialty - we know what we are doing and we get results.

Our official position is that we expect to show our hunters minimum 140 class mule deer or larger. Yes, we do get larger muleys as witnessed by our 4-year average of 160 B&C average score for our mule deer. However, we do not want to in any way mislead any hunter into thinking that he simply has to book a hunt with THA and turn up and that there is then every likelihood that he should have an opportunity at a 190+ class mule deer. We assure you that we have had hunters who, in spite of many communications, hear what they want to hear and not what we have really said. It is extremely important that every hunter is realistic. We want to get the big one just like every hunter who hunts with THA. There is no doubt that we have the best mule deer hunting areas and very experienced guides. These are the criteria that typically ensure a successful hunt and another returning THA hunter.

Transportation for all of our mule deer hunts is primarily in a 4x4. Alberta is big country and the tested and proven method for finding and harvesting trophy mule deer is covering lots of extensive territory, glassing all possible bedding and feeding areas, being in good physical condition and hunting long and hard.

We will find mule deer in their preferred habitat and we know what that is and where it is located. We do not use remote camps for our mule deer hunts since the largest quantity and best quality of mule deer tend to be harvested from more open rural country. This open country has woodlots and some bushes, but frequently consists more of long grasses and brush on huge rolling hills where natural ground blinds, field swales, fence rows and other natural outcroppings allow for stalking these magnificent animals. In our 'Bush' mule deer hunts, there is obviously more cover available to the muleys and, as a result, our 'Bush' muley hunters do not see 'hundreds' of mule deer during their hunt.

As well, we provide low cost optional mule deer hunting as a secondary option on many of our elk and moose hunts. It is important that hunters understand that, on these hunts, mule deer are not as plentiful and are not a priority species that we will spend any real amount of time hunting - unless of course we harvest the primary species early in the hunt. We do not describe our 'Bush' hunts or secondary option mule deer hunts as 'Trophy' hunts, although there are trophy muleys to be had on the these hunts.

We provide free wolf & coyote hunting to all of our mule deer hunters. The odds of seeing a wolf are low in most areas, however, we usually harvest several wolves each hunting season. Alberta coyotes are plentiful and generally larger than typically seen elsewhere.

All our Mule Deer hunts are fully guided with 2 hunters per guide (except the 3-day Trophy hunts which are guided one-on-one) and are all-inclusive (airport service, guiding, accommodation, meals, rough caping & transportation during the hunt). Other than the prerequisite rental vehicle to allow hunters maximum flexibility, with THA there are no hidden, or surprise, charges and no trophy fees. One-on-one guiding is available on most hunts at an additional cost of $1,500/week. Also, non-hunters are welcome at an additional $1,500/week per person.

All hunt pricing is in Canadian funds and tax (6%) and licenses are extra.
